A foundation established to offer free legal services to indigent
people in Sokoto by the immediate past governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji
Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has secured the freedom of no fewer than 20
inmates from Sokoto Central Prison.
The inmates were freed through
a nongovernmental organisation, AMWA Free Legal Services Foundation
initiated by the former governor.
In a statement made available to
journalists in Sokoto, and signed by the foundation’s Secretary and
Chief Legal Adviser, Bashir Mu’azu Jodi esq, and Abdhameed Zubairu esq
respectively, they explained that the total sum of four hundred naira
was expended.
The statement further said that the money was presented by Wamakko
during Eid el fir to free 20 inmates who were incarcerated but have an
option of fine.
The gesture, according to the former governor is to contribute his own quota to the administration of justice in the state.
“The foundation is currently undertaking 10 cases on defence of some indigent persons in various courts across the state.
“The beneficiaries express joy over the gesture and promised not to engage into any legal vices again,” the statement noted.
